BECOME THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF
Welcome to Lidingö Pilates and Yoga Center! We began in January of 2007, on a small scale, as part of Lidingö Gymnastikskolan. Over the years we have developed and grown and today we go it alone. We currently host a busy schedule of both Pilates and Yoga, offering authentic, intelligent, gentle, and effective practices with tools for personal development- an opportunity to become the best version of You!
We believe, and are confident, that in order to become the best version of ourselves, we must incorporate movement and exercise into our daily lives. But we also need tools for recovery, reflection, and relaxation in order to achieve balance. Our ambition is to meet all these requirements with our courses.
There are as many styles of yoga as there are shades of blue and they often emphasize one particular aspect of yoga. One common example of this is the yoga that one encounters at the gym which typically focuses on the physical practice-the Asanas, often ignoring the true essence and core principles of yoga. As a result, there are some stereotypes and misinterpretations surrounding yoga. Genuine yoga is a multifaceted spiritual and physical practice resulting in well being, physical and mental growth and a better mind body connection. The Sanskrit word Yoga means “union”; referring to the unity of mind, body, spirit as well as the uniting of “masculine” and “feminine” energies, front and back of the body, right and left brain, determination and acceptance-essentially, creating balance in every aspect of our lives.
We strive to present both the simplicity and the complexity of what yoga has to offer with an understanding that yoga is for everyone and anyone. Yoga is so much more than simply twisting oneself into a pretzel. It is a means of achieving physical and mental strength and focus, a free and mobile body, new and heightened awareness, and the ability to listen to the body and recognize its needs.
Unlike standard weight training which traditionally focuses on the major muscles or primary movers, Pilates builds core stability and creates balance in the physical body providing one with better control, efficiency, mobility, endurance and coordination. By building subtle strength from the inside out, we begin to peel away layers of tension and compensation which are often result in poor posture, persistent back, neck, and shoulder stiffness or pain and lead to overuse and stress. Members consistently comment that they quickly discover muscles that they didn’t realize they had. This is a testament to the ability of Pilates to wake essentially dormant muscles that should be assisting major muscles in a way that cultivates grace and ease and results in longer, leaner, less bulky muscles.
In our classes we adhere to the core principles of Pilates as they are presented in the Stott Pilates Method as well as Joseph Pilates very specific Classical Pilates methodology or “Contrology” as he originally called it. In short, this means that we work with very specific ideas and principles to improve function by correcting breath and movement patterns, pelvis, spine, shoulder, neck and head placement, and restoring the natural mechanism that the body innately recognizes.
To keep the body guessing we go to great effort to introduce various props and equipment which keep challenging the principles in new and surprising ways which adds an element of fun and helps to avoid the so called “plateau effect” which can result from doing the exact same routine time and again. The brain and the body needs to be surprised and challenged. We take pride in the fact that we are the most well equipped Pilates Center on Lidingö offering intelligent Pilates courses that are both effective and fun.
There is a vast difference between a Course and an ongoing open class. With a course the entire group begins at the same level appropriate for their needs and ability. No one slips through the cracks. The instructor has an opportunity to get to know you and your personal issues/strengths/weaknesses and can design and pace and modify the class accordingly. This creates a sense of unity and security which is essential in a process which requires trust and full mind and body engagement.
The vast majority of our members, testify to a sense of renewal and regeneration and tell us that they look forward to their weekly “sacred time”. This certainly makes it easier to stay committed and makes one less prone to let a week slide by. It is this prioritization and continuity that most greatly contributes to the success and achievement of ones goal of a deeper sense of well being and a stronger relationship with one self.
